Many field guides show color pictures and have excellent descriptions of birds. In addition, there are some great CDs which let us hear real bird sounds. There are also a few DVDs or VHS tapes which show the bird as it sings. Resources in all categories are increasing, making it an exciting time to be a bird watcher and listener!
What we hope to do here is give you some content reference so you can create a system for studying bird sounds which will be logical and cost effective.
These reviews include our OPINIONS. It behooves you to research all the resources yourself. People are different, as you well know. What one person might find superfluous can be just what someone else is looking for. There has been a lot of time and effort spent on all of these products and that effort deserves your consideration.
The job of review is also considerable. We'll start with those items with which we are most famliar and expand the list as time goes by. That doesn't mean we value those we start with more, just that we have to start somewhere.
IMPORTANT: If you feel a review is unfair or just wrong or you want to add a comment or your personal experience (or a full review!), please E-mail us and comment. Be sure to let us know if we can quote you on the site.
Note: this system of review is to aid fairly serious STUDY. If you are really lucky you can remember a bird song you hear quickly and accurately. Most of us have to study and employ the age old method of learning: repetition. Create a system to build confidence in your ability to distinguish among the common birds then it will be easier to move on to birds which are less common and more difficult to see when you're out.
Have fun listening!
